There is a phrase in ‘Maha Upanishad’, called ‘’Vasudaiva Kutumbakam‘’, which means ‘The world is one family’. I owe my present self to all those countless countries, cultures, and people of different genres that my life is so blessed to be associated with. I am yet to visit a country that didn’t fascinate me in a way or other. They all had their fair share of glory in the past or in the present. Reminds me of a quote from ‘Ulyssess’.
“We are not now that strength which in old days moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are. One equal temper of heroic hearts, made weak by time and fate, but strong in will. To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.” – Alfred Tennyson (in one of his famous works – ‘Ulyssess’).
You probably remember hearing it in the movie ‘Skyfall’; but it is true for most if not all countries. Enthralling stories from their history, achievements they made, powers they exercised, honors they had, lives they lived and wisdom they gained. But trying to jot all of them is all but impossible for a miniscule me. Therefore I will focus on India and Switzerland, the countries that played sizeable role in my life thus far.
India
(भारत)
Switzerland
(Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft)
How I usually describe it: Imagine 29 states of sizes between Germany and Puerto Rico, sharing the same identity. With 22 official languages, 13 different scripts, ca. 3.2 Mio km2, 1.3 billion people living in a democracy under one flag. That’s India for me.
Key takeaways: Rich cultural heritage, philosophy, colors, yoga, Ayurveda, spices (not just chilly powder), Himalayas, Konkan and Kerala.
How I usually describe it: Imagine a tiny population of never more than a couple of million, ca. 42K km2, 4 official languages, fiercely protecting its sovereignty whilst standing an example of direct democracy to this very day. That’s Switzerland for me.
Key takeaways: Amazing precision, cheese, nature, neutrality, watches, super clean lakes, chocolate and Ricola.
